Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated film Jana Nayagan, which was originally slated for a January 9, 2026 release, continues to face uncertainty after running into certification hurdles. The Central Board
of Film Certification (CBFC) did not issue a certificate ahead of the planned release, prompting the makers to approach the Madras High Court for relief.
On Friday, the Madras High Court initially directed the CBFC to grant the film a U/A 16+ certificate. However, the relief proved short-lived, as the court subsequently stayed its own order. The matter is now scheduled for its next hearing on January 21, 2026, effectively putting the film’s release on hold once again.
Makers May Approach Supreme Court
According to a report by India Today, the makers of Jana Nayagan are now considering moving the Supreme Court to seek an early resolution. While this development has not yet been officially confirmed, it signals the production team’s intent to exhaust all legal avenues to secure the film’s release.
Producer Venkat K Narayana Addresses Fans
Amid growing disappointment among fans, producer Venkat K Narayana of KVN Productions shared a video message on Instagram, opening up about the emotional toll the delay has taken on the team.
“This has been an extremely emotional and difficult moment for everyone who has poured their heart, soul and years of hard work into this film,” he said. Emphasising the significance of the project, he added, “Above all, we firmly believe that Thalapathy Vijay sir deserves the farewell he has earned through decades of love from his fans.”
Kamal Haasan Extends Support
Veteran actor and politician Kamal Haasan also weighed in on the controversy with a strongly worded note on social media. While he refrained from naming Vijay or Jana Nayagan directly, his message was widely interpreted as support for the film and its makers.
Haasan called for systemic reform in film certification, writing, “What is required now is a principled relook at the certification processes with defined timelines for certification, transparent evaluation, and written, reasoned justification for every suggested cut or edit.”
He further urged the film fraternity to come together, stating that constructive dialogue with government institutions was essential to protect creative freedom and uphold constitutional values.
A Farewell Film For Thalapathy Vijay
Jana Nayagan holds immense emotional value for Vijay’s fanbase, as it marks the actor’s final cinematic appearance before he fully transitions into politics. Having announced his decision to step away from acting, Vijay has committed himself to his political journey, making the film a symbolic send-off to a career spanning decades.
As legal proceedings continue, fans now await clarity on when Jana Nayagan will finally make its way to theatres.
