India Tour of Australia 2025 Squad Announcement Live Updates: The future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in India’s ODI setup continues to be widely debated, but both are expected to be part of the squad
travelling to Australia for the three-match ODI series starting on October 19 in Perth. National selectors, however, will likely make adjustments due to fitness concerns and workload management.
Rohit and Kohli have been preparing diligently after a seven-month hiatus from international cricket. Kohli impressed with a century against Pakistan and top-scored in the semi-final against Australia, while Rohit made a match-winning contribution in the final against New Zealand. Both are now focused exclusively on limited-overs cricket following their retirement from Tests and T20Is, sparking questions about their longevity ahead of the 2027 50-over World Cup.
Hardik Pandya, recovering from a quadriceps injury, and Rishabh Pant, recovering from a foot fracture, are unavailable, while Test skipper Shubman Gill, who has recently completed the Asia Cup and is midway through a two-Test series, may be rested from either ODIs or T20Is.
Workload management remains a key concern. Jasprit Bumrah may be rested for the Australian ODIs given his recent Asia Cup and Test workload, while Gill’s participation may also be reconsidered to manage travel and match intensity. If rested, Rohit’s opening partner could be Abhishek Sharma or Yashasvi Jaiswal, both left-handers. Nitish Kumar Reddy could replace Pandya if fit, and Sanju Samson may secure the second wicketkeeping slot over Dhruv Jurel. With only six ODIs scheduled this year, selectors are expected to take a measured approach, prioritising the T20 World Cup and upcoming home Tests against South Africa.
