LeBron James is taking an unconventional route as he gears up for his historic 23rd NBA season.
The 40-year-old Los Angeles Lakers star is expected to practice with the franchise’s G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, later this week as part of his recovery process.
Head coach JJ Redick revealed the plan ahead of the Lakers’ 121–111 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Monday night. Redick initially told reporters that James was “literally practicing with South Bay today,” before the team clarified that the workout would take place later in the week, as South Bay was off on Monday.
James has yet to play or even practice with the Lakers this season after developing sciatica near the start of training camp. The team has not provided a timetable
for his return, and James has remained largely silent publicly since media day in late September.
Despite his absence, the Lakers have started the season strong, boasting a 7–2 record — including six wins in their last seven games — even while managing injuries to James, Luka Doncic, and Austin Reaves.
Reaves, who recently returned from a hamstring issue, joked about James’ temporary G League stint.
“I told him he should play a game for South Bay,” Reaves said with a laugh. “But knowing him, he’s been watching every game, analyzing, figuring out how he can help when he’s back. He understands the game as well as anyone.”
James is not expected to join the Lakers on their current five-game road trip, but could be back in action around the team’s next home game on November 18 against the Utah Jazz.
When he does return, James will officially break the NBA record for most seasons played, as he will embark on his historic 23rd season in the league.
