After a quiet start at the box office, all eyes were on how Ek Din would hold up over its opening weekend. The film, led by Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi, entered theatres with modest expectations, but early trends suggest it is struggling to find momentum.
The romantic drama, which released on Friday, has seen little improvement in collections on its second day. According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Ek Din earned ₹1.00 crore on Day 2, marking a slight drop from its opening day figure of ₹1.15 crore. With this, the film’s total India gross stands at ₹2.57 crore, while the net collection is ₹2.15 crore so far.
The film’s performance comes amid largely negative reviews, which appear to have impacted audience turnout. Despite being backed by a strong
production team, the initial response has not translated into box office growth over the first two days.
Competition has also been a major factor. Ek Din is currently up against multiple releases across genres, including Raja Shivaji, featuring Riteish Deshmukh, the horror-comedy Bhooth Bangla starring Akshay Kumar, and the Hollywood sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2. This crowded release window has made it tougher for the film to attract viewers.
Directed by Sunil Pandey, Ek Din is produced by Mansoor Khan, Aamir Khan, and Aparna Purohit under the banner of Aamir Khan Productions. The film marks Sai Pallavi’s debut in Hindi cinema and is Junaid Khan’s third outing after Maharaj and Loveyapa.
The story is adapted from the 2016 Thai film One Day. It follows a man who quietly harbours feelings for a colleague but never confesses. His wish to spend just one day with her unexpectedly comes true, setting the narrative in motion.
Ahead of the film’s release, Sai Pallavi had spoken about her experience working on the project and entering Bollywood. At a pre-release event, she said, “Thank you Aamir sir for putting me in the space like this, for making me a part of this film where I am able to enjoy… This is going to be my first Hindi film and I am actually a quite nervous but it’s an absolutely beautiful journey. Thank you so much the whole team, Junaid was absolutely a beautiful co-star and an obedient child actually,” she said.
Early reviews have also been mixed. A News18 review noted, “An artist of the calibre of Sai truly deserved a better Bollywood debut. The writing is so bland that Meera becomes one of her weakest performances till date. At some point, Dinesh describes Meera as ‘Apple ke tarah exclusive aur Android ke tarah har jagah sync hone waali.’ But you realise that these are just words with no evidence to prove what makes her a cut above the rest.”
Our review further commented on Junaid’s performance, stating, “Junaid, on the other hand, looks consistently perplexed. Yes, this is a part that required restrain but his performance feels uncertain as though he himself hadn’t quite settled on how to approach it. In a scene, while trying to imply how out-of-league is Meera for him, he says, ‘Gareeb ka bachcha jis tarah khilone ke dukaan ko dekhta hai…’ But even then, he seems to be searching for the role.”
