A Reddit post describing how a dating app conversation led to a high-paying job offer has gone viral. The post, titled “Got an 18 LPA offer because of a Hinge match,” was shared on the subreddit r/Indiangirlsontinder by a final-year university student, who said he landed a job offer worth Rs 18 lakh per annum after an unexpected professional connection through the dating app Hinge.
In the post, the student detailed a difficult placement season marked by academic setbacks.
“I am in my final year of uni and have been giving multiple interviews. I am from a tier 1-ish college. Not exactly tier 1 but definitely above most tier 2s,” he wrote. Despite the background, he said his academic record worked against him.
“I had backlogs. Two officially. Actually
five because of an accident,” he added, saying most companies filtered him out before interviews.
After repeated rejections, he said he accepted a Rs 7 LPA offer at an AI startup out of fear rather than confidence.
“Honestly I felt like I had to take it because I did not think I would get any other decent interview calls,” he wrote.
Around the same time, he matched with a woman on Hinge and struck up a casual conversation.
“I mentioned the job casually and she told me her friend is an HR manager at a big tech firm in Bangalore,” he said. According to the post, she helped get his profile noticed internally, leading to an interview call.
Describing the interview process, the student said it was less focused on traditional problem-solving rounds and more on his existing work.
“They mostly went through my GitHub and LinkedIn and asked me to explain a few of my codebases,” he wrote. He said his projects stood out because they were not standard templates, explaining, “I forked a popular open source project and optimized it properly. Added some AI features and improved the UX a lot.”
He also spoke candidly about using AI tools while learning.
“To be honest without AI I would not be able to build half the things on my GitHub or LinkedIn. But with AI I can build pretty solid stuff and explain it properly,” he wrote.
Despite feeling that his interview performance was only average, the outcome surprised him. “Today afternoon I got the LOI. 18 LPA. Still feels unreal,” he said, adding that the turnaround came after months of struggling to even secure interview calls.
“All because I matched with a random girl on Hinge and talked about my work. Life is wild sometimes,” he said.
The post included a blurred screenshot of the offer letter, which stated that the proposed compensation was “a CTC of up to INR 18,00,000 per annum, subject to final role mapping and internal approvals.”
The story quickly gained traction on Reddit, drawing thousands of upvotes and comments. Users congratulated the student, with one writing, “It’s not every day that one gets to experience such good luck.” Another joked, “Hope you took her out on a date after that.”
