Sometimes, smaller films don’t just survive in theatres, they surprise everyone by standing shoulder to shoulder with much bigger productions. That’s exactly the conversation Deool Band 2 has triggered since its release, especially in the Marathi film space where strong storytelling continues to find loyal audiences.
Released in cinemas on May 21 across Maharashtra, the film has been steadily building momentum through positive word of mouth. What makes its run even more interesting is how it has managed to stay relevant in a crowded theatrical window, even as several larger-scale films compete for attention.
The project is part of a growing trend where regional cinema is expanding its reach beyond language barriers. In May, Marathi cinema saw
multiple releases performing strongly at the box office, including Deool Band 2, which was made on a modest budget of around Rs 8 to Rs 10 crore.
The film has reportedly collected Rs 45.05 crore gross in India, with a net collection of Rs 38.30 crore. These numbers place it among the notable Marathi box office performers in recent times. Its predecessor, Deool Band (2015), was also a commercial success, earning around Rs 20 crore on a budget of Rs 6 crore.
At the centre of Deool Band 2 is actor Mohan Joshi, who reprises his role as Shri Swami Samarth Maharaj. The sequel also features Snehal Tarde in a pivotal role as Sangeeta Paygude, a grieving farmer who finds herself at the heart of an intense emotional journey.
The storyline focuses on Sangeeta’s personal struggle, as she is pushed to the edge by hardship and grief. In a moment of emotional collapse, she throws a stone at a shrine and experiences something extraordinary—an appearance of Swami Samarth that only she can see. From there, the narrative follows their unique journey together, exploring themes of faith, pain, and resilience.
Directed and written by Pravin Tarde, the film also includes performances from Mahesh Manjrekar and Prasad Oak in important roles, adding further weight to the ensemble cast.
The sequel continues the story arc of the original Deool Band (2015), which followed Dr Raghav Shastri, an atheist scientist whose life changes after a series of unexplained events. In that film, repeated incidents and personal experiences lead him toward spirituality, eventually transforming his belief system entirely.
The first instalment featured Mohan Joshi alongside Gashmeer Mahajani, Girija Joshi, Mohan Agashe, and Nivedita Saraf, and went on to find commercial success during its release.
With Deool Band 2, the franchise revisits familiar spiritual themes but places them within a more emotionally charged rural setting, which appears to be connecting strongly with audiences this time around.
