New Delhi, May 19 (PTI) The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar on Tuesday reviewed the progress of bio-remediation and waste management operations at the Okhla landfill site, amid an extension in the timeline for flattening the garbage mound beyond the pervious July target.
During his visit to the site, Khirwar inspected the functioning of trommel machines deployed for biomining operations and directed officials to expedite the process to ensure timely clearance of legacy waste accumulated at the landfill, according to an official statement.
Senior MCD officials briefed the commissioner on the current status of biomining activities and other ongoing works at the site.
Khirwar also reviewed operations at the Construction
and Demolition (C&D) waste plant, inspected the Okhla Engineered Sanitary Landfill site and visited the Okhla Compost Plant, the statement read.
The inspection comes days after Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi told PTI that the MCD was aiming to clear the Bhalswa and Okhla landfill sites by the end of this year, while remediation work at the Ghazipur landfill was targeted for completion by the end of 2027.
The revised timeline marks an extension from the earlier target of July 2026 for flattening the Okhla landfill site.
“The civic body was continuously carrying out biomining and remediation work at the city’s three legacy waste sites and additional machinery was being installed to speed up the process,” Wahi said. PTI MSJ NB
