Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has said that the criticism that his team has received for their performance in IPL 2026 is appropriate, adding that they have to work harder and find a way forward, as the side desperately looks for a win.
Addressing criticism over inconsistent performances in IPL 2026, Fleming acknowledged that results inevitably shape perception, but maintained that scrutiny comes with the responsibility of the role.
Fleming emphasised that Chennai Super Kings are focused on speeding up cohesion within the group to stay competitive, pointing to recent games where the team has stayed in contention despite narrow margins.
“Look, it is a really good sign that we are working very hard and we are well aware, I am well aware and the
criticism is appropriate. So, we just have to work harder and find a way forward,” Fleming said at the pre-match press conference.
CSK will take on Delhi Capitals in an evening game on Saturday, April 11, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Fleming credited the cricketers for the side’s past success as well, reiterating that while coaching helps with preparation and mindset, it is performances on the field that win titles.
“It is actually purely the players. For me, it just gives us another year of coaching. And it has always been the case. The players do it. The coaching off the field is really important, but the performances on the field win titles,” Fleming said.
“And, yes, we play a part in the fitness of players, the performance of players, the mental state of players, but ultimately the coaches are judged on the players,” Fleming added.
Fleming reflected on his long association with one of the game’s most successful leaders as well, MS Dhoni, describing himself as ‘incredibly lucky’ to have worked alongside him.
