Cricketer Agni Dev Chopra dismissed as unfounded reports suggesting that he has entered the player auction for the 2026 Pakistan Super League (PSL). The claims, which circulated widely across cricket and entertainment platforms, generated considerable trolling against him, owing to his Indian background.
Chopra is the son of acclaimed Bollywood filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra (known for 12th Fail, 3 Idiots) and renowned film critic Anupama Chopra. The family was widely targeted on social media after the reports began circulating in the Indian media on Saturday evening.
Most outlets picked the story from a Pakistani portal, which listed the names registered for the PSL, which did have Chopra’s name in it. The family was labeled as ‘anti-national’
and ‘traitors’, due to the strained political relationship between the countries.
Chopra issued a public clarification through social media, stating that the reports were inaccurate and misleading. He affirmed that he has not registered for the PSL and emphasised that his immediate focus lies on pursuing his cricketing career in the United States and aligning himself with long-term professional ambitions.
“Fake and misleading reports are being circulated in my name regarding a tournament,” the statement said. “I would like to clarify that I have not enrolled for the PSL. I remain fully focused on my cricket journey in the USA and my long-term career goals. I request everyone not to fall prey to misinformation.”

Until 2025, Chopra was an active participant in India’s domestic circuit. His most notable season came in 2023–24, when he topped the run charts in the Ranji Trophy Plate Group, an effort that earned him the Madhavrao Scindia Award from the BCCI.
But in 2025, the BCCI brought in a rule change barring those without an Indian passport from the Ranji Trophy. He moved to the USA, using his citizenship in the country to enter Major League Cricket. He was picked up by MI Cape Town in the latest edition’s draft.
No Indian player has ever played in the PSL, whether directly or indirectly. The 2026 season of the league will clash with the IPL.
