Bangladesh scripted a new chapter in their cricketing history, defeating Pakistan for the first time in a home Test. Riding on Nahid Rana’s fifer in the second innings, Bangladesh beat Pakistan by 104 runs in the rain-hit first Test to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Bangladesh converted a rain-affected Test into a decisive result, outplaying Pakistan on the final day to turn a drifting contest into a statement victory in the World Test Championship.
After posting 413 in the first innings, Bangladesh saw Pakistan respond strongly with 386. However, rain washed out significant time on Days 3 and 4, setting up a tense finish. On the final day, Bangladesh showed clear intent, scoring quick runs before declaring at 240 for 9, setting Pakistan a target
of 267.
Despite reaching tea at 4 down and seemingly in control, Pakistan failed to push on. Apart from Abdullah Fazal’s fighting 66, the batting lacked purpose, with several players getting starts but not converting them into meaningful contributions.
The game turned sharply after tea, thanks to Nahid Rana’s fiery spell. The young pacer combined pace with discipline to break Pakistan’s resistance. Saud Shakeel’s loose drive and Mohammad Rizwan’s misjudgement triggered a collapse, as Bangladesh ran through the lower order to seal the win.
Nahid finished with a five-wicket haul and continued to build his reputation as a rising force in red-ball cricket. The victory also earns Bangladesh 12 crucial World Test Championship points, ensuring they cannot lose the series from here.
The win has shaken up the World Test Championship (WTC) standings in a big way.
Bangladesh jumped from eighth to sixth after registering their first win of the cycle. Their percentage of points (PCT) saw a sharp rise from 16.67 to 44.44.
Pakistan, on the other hand, slipped from fifth to seventh following their second defeat in three matches. While their points tally remains 12, their PCT dropped from 50.00 to 33.33 after the loss.
