Enzo Fernandez Becomes 6th Player To Be Sent Off (Receive Red Card) In FIFA World Cup Final

Enzo Fernandez entered the unwanted record books on Sunday by becoming only the sixth player in FIFA World Cup history to receive a red card in a final. The Argentina midfielder was sent off in the 90+3rd minute of the FIFA World Cup 2026 final against Spain on Sunday (July 19).

Fernandez was shown a second yellow card after committing a foul on Spain defender Pau Cubarsí, reducing Argentina to 10 men in the closing stages of the match.

Pedro Monzón of Argentina was the first player to be sent off in a FIFA World Cup final. He came on as a substitute for

Argentina in the 1990 final against West Germany at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on July 8, 1990, but was shown a red card in the 65th minute.

In the same final, Monzón’s teammate Gustavo Dezotti was also sent off in the 87th minute. Dezotti received his first yellow card in the fifth minute and his second booking in the 87th minute, resulting in his dismissal.

The next player to be sent off in a FIFA World Cup final was France defender Marcel Desailly. He received a second yellow card in the 68th minute of the 1998 FIFA World Cup final against Brazil at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis on July 12, 1998.
