7 January 2011 – the date when England men’s team last won a Test on Australian soil. 27 December 2025 – the date they finally won a Test again in the country.
Between these dates, England endured a winless
streak of 18 Tests in the home of their greatest rivals, a drought that was finally snapped during a manic two-day affair at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Ben Stokes’ men put the off-field drama behind them to secure a thrilling four-wicket victory in the fourth Test of the ongoing Ashes on Saturday. Australia still lead the five-match series 3-1 and have secured the urn, but the win couldn’t have come at a better time for a team that has been severely criticised for its approach to red-ball cricket and off-field antics.
England chased down the target of 175 in the final session of the second day’s play of the Boxing Day Test and thus, after a whopping 5,468 days, won a Test in Australia.

England’s last 20 Tests on Australian soil
While only two of the members of the current Australia squad – Steven Smith and Usman Khawaja – were part of the playing XI that last lost a Test at home to England before today, none of the current members of the touring party had ever experienced what it’s like to outdo their greatest rivals in their own backyard.
Stokes thus becomes the first male England captain since Andrew Strauss to oversee a Test win in Australia.
