Three members of a family were killed after a fire broke out in a residential building in Mumbai’s Goregaon area in the early hours of Saturday, January 10. The victims died due to suffocation caused by heavy smoke, officials said.
The fire was reported at around 3.06 AM in a single-storey house located on Rajaram Lane in Bhagat Singh Nagar. According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade, the blaze started on the ground and first floors of the structure and quickly spread, damaging household items and electrical wiring.
Local residents were the first to respond and tried to control the flames using buckets of water. Fire brigade teams reached the spot soon after and disconnected the power supply to prevent the fire from spreading further.
During rescue operations,
firefighters pulled out three people from the smoke-filled house and rushed them to Trauma Care Hospital. Doctors declared all three dead on arrival, stating that they had died due to suffocation.
The deceased were identified as Sanjog Pawaskar (48), Harshada Pawaskar (19) and Kushal Pawaskar (12). Officials said all three were members of the same family.
The exact cause of the fire is not yet known. Preliminary suspicion points towards an electrical short circuit or domestic negligence. A detailed inquiry has been initiated to determine how the fire started.
Officials said that if negligence is established, action can be taken under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with causing death by negligence, along with relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act. Further investigation is underway.
