Chennai, Jun 5 (PTI) To mark World Environment Day, celebrated every year on June 5, Tamil Nadu launched on Friday India’s first state-level SOP for cool roof coating application to combat intensifying urban heat.
The technical framework was released by Environment Minister V Rajeev and Forests Minister R V Ranjithkumar.
Developed by the Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company and the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission in collaboration with the UNEP and Seeds Technical Services, the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) provides a standardised 12-stage implementation model for homes, schools, and public buildings, stated a press release.
The scientifically validated approach uses high solar-reflective coatings to reduce roof surface temperatures by 6–8°C
and indoor temperatures by 4–5°C. Officials stated that these solutions can lower cooling energy demand by up to 20 per cent, according to the release. PTI JR JR ADB
