Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the most loved actors across the world. It is only common for actors like him who have spent such a long time in the industry to eventually move into direction, as they have worked closely with talented filmmakers and learned their techniques and quirks over the years.
It seems that the Titanic actor has no plans of stepping into direction. He explained his reasons in a candid conversation with Martin Scorsese during the A Year in Time event organised by TIME magazine.
‘I Would Never Want To Direct’
During his conversation with Scorsese, the actor confessed, “Some people have asked me if I wanted to direct. I’m like ‘I would never want to direct’.” He elaborated further, acknowledging that he could never replicate what
Martin does and admitted that he should have observed what Scorsese does behind the camera to gain a deeper understanding of the filmmaking process.
Since Scorsese and Di Caprio have collaborated on six films, the actor also shared insights into their “unique process.” He described it as a long period of discussion, often engaging in debates for months before filming.
Leonardo Di Caprio explained that from a young age, he was drawn to movies and aspired to be an actor. He mentioned how his father introduced him to Scorsese’s films, as well as Robert De Niro’s.
He revealed that his father used to tell him that, “If there is anyone you want to strive to work with in your career, now that you have the capability of doing movies, it’s with this gentleman.” This early exposure to Scorsese’s work had a significant impact on Leonardo.
Leonardo Di Caprio and Martin Scorsese’s Next Film
During the interaction, the actor also revealed that he and Di Caprio share an approach to their work that often moves in a less obvious direction. This is a philosophy, Leonardo revealed that the actor–director duo is currently applying to their next film together. He described the experience as “the most profound learning process.”
The film Di Caprio was referring to is titled, What Happens At Night and is currently underway. The project will also star Jennifer Lawrence and is an adaptation of a novel by Peter Cameron.
