Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra’s Varanasi is one of the most-awaited ones. The film also stars Prithviraj Sukumaran, and recently, he has officially wrapped up a major shooting schedule. He marked the milestone with a celebratory note on social media. Currently, Priyanka Chopra is also in Hyderabad for the shoot.
Prithviraj Sukumaran shared a picture as he wrapped the shoot of SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi. Sharing a picture of his sinful indulgence on his Instagram Stories, the actor penned, “End of a schedule that I have worked immensely hard for. Cheat meal well earned. See you in theatres, April 7, 2027. #Varanasi.” In 2025, the first look poster of Prithviraj was released. He was seen seated on an automated wheelchair. He maintained a stern expression
on his face as he also looked scary and dangerous. “After canning the first shot with Prithvi, I walked up to him and said you are one of the finest actors I’ve ever known. Bringing life to this sinister, ruthless, powerful antagonist KUMBHA was creatively very satisfying. Thank you Prithvi for slipping into his chair… literally,” Rajamouli wrote.

SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi May Release In Two Parts | Report
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, the upcoming epic action-adventure could be split into two films to accommodate its expansive narrative. The decision, if finalised, mirrors a storytelling approach that Rajamouli successfully executed with Baahubali, which changed the dynamics of large-scale filmmaking in India and paved the way for multi-part franchise films.
A source familiar with the development told the publication, “Three hours-plus would not be enough for Varanasi. They are looking at extending it into a two-part format,” adding, “Rajamouli and his team feel this extended format would afford them the liberty to tell a more expanded story without looking anxiously at the clock.”
The film features Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran in lead roles and is being mounted on a large scale.
Despite being set in Varanasi, the film is not being shot in the holy city. Instead, the makers have recreated an elaborate version of Varanasi in Hyderabad. Reports indicate that large sets, including a replica of the Ratneshwar Mahadev temple, have been constructed to bring authenticity to the story. A full-scale temple structure has also been built for sequences set in the past and will later be submerged underwater to depict scenes from the present timeline.
The film’s narrative is said to span multiple timelines, blending historical and contemporary elements. Speaking to Polygon, Priyanka Chopra shared insight into the film’s structure, saying, “It’s not like you’re sitting in a machine and going into… it’s not Back to the Future. But we do go from 7,200 BCE to 2027. So you travel worlds and realms that our characters move within, which makes it really interesting. So it is a time-travel movie.”
Filming took place extensively in Hyderabad, Odisha and Kenya. With a budget of Rs. 1,000–1,300 crore, it is set to become one of the most expensive Indian films ever made. Varanasi is scheduled to be theatrically released in April 2027.
