Chennai, Jun 2 (PTI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and Union Minister C R Patil witnessed the signing of an MoU between the Centre and the State for the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.O.
In a meeting where Vijay joined from the Secretariat and the Union Jal Shakti Minister participated via video conference from New Delhi, the agreement was signed, a press release said.
The Jal Jeevan Mission scheme was initially implemented in its first phase from 2019 to 2024. Currently, based on approval granted by the Union Cabinet, the scheme has been extended until December 2028.
Under the first phase of the scheme, a total of 46.71 lakh functional household tap connections were provided across Tamil Nadu, it said.
With the signing of today’s
agreement for the extended implementation period of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.O, Tamil Nadu will receive an initial tranche of Rs 2,177.27 crore from funds allocated to the state by the Union Government’s Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS), it added.
While Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti and Railways V Somanna participated via video conference from New Delhi, Chief Secretary M Saikumar, Additional Chief Secretary (Municipal Administration and Water Supply) Gagandeep Singh Bedi, and senior officials attended the meeting here.
The extension of Jal Jeevan Mission until 2028 reaffirms the commitment of both the Union and Tamil Nadu governments to ensuring a safe, adequate, and sustainable supply of drinking water to rural households.
Jal Jeevan Mission, according to the government website, will also include source sustainability measures as mandatory components, such as recharge and reuse through greywater management, water conservation, and rainwater harvesting. PTI SNR SSK
