Mohamed Salah was back on the training pitch at Liverpool on Tuesday, smiling and fully involved as the Reds prepared for their Champions League trip to Marseille.
The Egypt forward’s return after the Africa
Cup of Nations has been keenly watched, not just for footballing reasons, but because of the storm he left behind before heading off to international duty.

Salah made headlines last month with an explosive interview in which he accused Liverpool of throwing him “under the bus” after being benched for three straight games. He also revealed he had no relationship with head coach Arne Slot.
Since then, the temperature has cooled. Salah came off the bench in December’s 2-0 Premier League win over Brighton, setting up a goal, and Slot later insisted the club had moved on.
That message was reinforced last week, with the Liverpool boss welcoming Salah back into the fold — even if he kept details of their conversations private.
“Even if I had 15 attackers I’d still be happy he’s back,” Slot said ahead of the weekend draw with Burnley, while stopping short of confirming whether Salah would start against Marseille.
Liverpool head into Wednesday’s Champions League clash sitting ninth in the league phase — just outside the automatic qualification spots for the last 16. A top-eight finish would avoid a tricky playoff round, adding extra weight to the trip to France.
Salah’s standing at the club remains towering. He is Liverpool’s third-highest scorer of all time, with 250 goals in 421 appearances since arriving from Roma in 2017, and has helped deliver two Premier League titles and a Champions League crown. He also signed a lucrative two-year extension last season.
But this campaign has been far less convincing.
The 33-year-old has managed just five goals in all competitions, mirroring a difficult stretch for Liverpool that saw their title defence unravel with six defeats in seven games earlier in the season.
Form has steadied since, with the Reds now unbeaten in 12 matches across all competitions — though they still trail league leaders Arsenal by 14 points.
