A 22-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district was among the nine people killed in the powerful car explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort on Monday evening, which has been registered as a suspected terror attack.
The victim, identified as Nauman, hailed from Jhinjhana in Shamli and had travelled to Delhi to purchase cosmetics for his small business. His grieving family arrived at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital on Tuesday morning to identify his body.
Nauman’s cousin, Aman (21), who was with him at the time of the blast, sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment.
The explosion, which occurred around 6:52 pm, ripped through a traffic intersection near the historic monument, killing nine people and injuring at least
20 others. A Hyundai i20 car bearing a Haryana registration number was at the centre of the blast, which shattered nearby vehicles and set off scenes of chaos and panic.
Eyewitnesses described horrific scenes of flames and mangled vehicles, with several people lying injured on the road moments after the deafening explosion.
Among those who suffered injuries in the blast were Ankush Sharma (28) and Rahul Kaushik (20), who were riding a bike back from the Gauri Shankar Temple. The explosion threw Ankush onto another car, leaving him with severe burns covering nearly 80% of his body.
The Delhi Police have registered a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and are treating the incident as a possible terror attack. Preliminary forensic reports and intelligence inputs have pointed to the likelihood of terror links behind the explosion.
The blast occurred just hours before security agencies in neighbouring Faridabad, Haryana, recovered 2,900 kilograms of explosives, intensifying suspicions of a coordinated operation.
Authorities have urged citizens to avoid sharing unverified videos or images related to the incident as investigations by the Delhi Police Special Cell and National Investigation Agency (NIA) continue.
The Red Fort blast has sparked outrage and fear across the capital, with victims’ families demanding swift justice and stronger safety measures in the city.
