Air pollution has become a matter of concern in India now. Many people are aware of the ill effects of air pollution on their bodies and how it not only impacts the lungs but also the skin, heart, and overall health. However, it is difficult to figure out just how affected one is by the air pollution if without an actual insight into your body and overall wellbeing.
We speak to Dr Tanish Mandal, Lab Head and Zonal Technical Chief (North India), Regional Reference Lab, Apollo Diagnostic Delhi, who shares a few timely tests that can detect early damage from air pollution and will help manage risks without any delay.
Currently, air pollution is a growing matter of concern across the country. Unfortunately, those tiny particles present in polluted
air, such as dust, smoke, and chemical pollutants, can penetrate the body. This can furthermore take a toll on the lungs, heart, and even the skin, and give you a tough time. Exposure can lead to coughing, shortness of breath, fatigue, skin irritation, and premature ageing. So, it is better to be safe than sorry.
Impact of air pollution on the body
Pollutants tend to irritate the airways, reduce lung function, and increase the risk of infections and chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, and even chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Fine particles in the air can enter the bloodstream, causing inflammation, high blood pressure, and a higher risk of heart attacks.
Pollution also accelerates skin ageing, dryness, rashes, and sensitivity due to oxidative stress and free radicals. Hence, stay proactive by taking various tests and improving the quality of life. These 3 tests, as advised by the doctor, will help in the timely detection of any problems linked to air pollution:
- Lung Function Tests: Measure how well your lungs are working. It will also detect early signs of reduced breathing capacity or chronic lung conditions like asthma or COPD.
- Inflammation Markers: Blood tests measure markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR). High levels indicate inflammation in the body caused by pollution or other stressors.
- Complete Blood Count (CBC): Detects changes in white blood cells due to inflammation or infection.
Skin Health Evaluation: Dermatological checkups can assess damage from environmental stressors.
Regular lung function tests and blood tests for inflammation can aid in the timely management of any health issues, such as lung problems. Moreover, protective measures like masks, air purifiers can reduce damage and keep your lungs, heart, and skin healthy in polluted environments. So, be attentive when it comes to health.
