After suffering a humiliating whitewash in a two-match Test series against South Africa at home, Team India will face the Proteas in a three-match ODI series which is set to start on Sunday (November 30)
in Ranchi. The next two 50-over matches are scheduled to take place in Raipur and Visakhapatnam on December 3 and December 6, respectively. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming three 50-over matches at home on November 23 and retained as many as eight players that featured in the two Tests as well.
Of those 8 players, seven played in both the matches but failed to impress with their performances. They would like to come up with big performances in the three 50-over matches to silence critics.
In addition to them, there will be seven new faces in India’s squad, the majority of whom are white-ball specialists now.
Here’s a look at the complete list of changes in India’s squad for the ODI series against South Africa from the Test squad:
IN: Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Tilak Varma, Harshit Rana, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Prasidh Krishna and Arshdeep Singh return to India’s squad for the three ODIs starting November 30. While Rohit and Kohli only play ODIs now, Harshit and Krishna were not picked in the Test squad, and the other three – Gaikwad, Arshdeep and Tilak – are yet to make their Test debut for Team India.
OUT: Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep are seven players who were part of the Test squad but will not participate in the ODI series. While Gill was not available for selection due to a neck injury, Bumrah has been rested. But the likes of Axar and Siraj were dropped from the squad after ordinary performances in three ODIs against Australia last month.
Padikkal and Akash Deep, who didn’t get a chance to be part of India’s playing XI in the Test series, are yet to make their ODI debuts, whereas Sudharsan’s last ODI appearance for India was way back on December 21, 2023.
Retained: KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Dhruv Jurel are eight players who, after playing in the Test series, will feature in the ODIs as well. Of these eight players, except for Nitish, seven played in both the Tests.
