Bangladesh authorities have identified three individuals allegedly involved in attempting to create disorder near the residence of India’s Assistant High Commissioner in Chattogram, interim Chief Adviser
Professor Muhammad Yunus said on Monday. The identification was made on the basis of video footage, officials informed.
The disclosure came during a high-level meeting chaired by Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna to review the country’s overall law and order situation.
The meeting was attended by Home Affairs Adviser Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman, and senior officials from various security and law enforcement agencies, according to the Chief Adviser’s press wing.
During the meeting, officials held detailed discussions on a range of issues, including security arrangements ahead of the upcoming Christmas and English New Year celebrations, the return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to Bangladesh, and other emerging law and order concerns.
The Chief Adviser was also briefed on the progress of investigations into the killing of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson and July movement figure Sharif Osman Hadi.
Police informed the meeting that, using video evidence, they have so far identified 31 suspects linked to recent attacks on the offices of two national daily newspapers and two cultural organisations.
As part of follow-up operations carried out across Dhaka and other parts of the country till Monday morning, at least six people have been arrested.
Those taken into custody have been identified as Md Kashem Faruqi, Md Saidur Rahman, Rakib Hossain, Md Naim, Md Sohel Rana and Md Shafikul Islam. Authorities said efforts are continuing to arrest the remaining suspects.
Separately, police confirmed that three individuals involved in an attempt to create unrest near the Indian Assistant High Commissioner’s residence in Chattogram have also been identified through video footage.
Chairing the meeting on Sunday afternoon, Yunus directed law enforcement agencies to expedite arrests in the Osman Hadi murder case and take swift action against those involved in unlawful activities.
He underlined that maintaining law and order was a top priority, particularly in view of the upcoming national elections, and said normalcy must be ensured at all costs.
