Chennai Super Kings take on the Mumbai Indians in a bottom-of-the-table clash in the IPL 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday in a crucial game for the most decorated sides in the history of the tournament.
Chennai suffered a devastating blow as in-form batter Ayush Mhatre was ruled out of the season due to a hamstring issue, and the side will have to find a way to keep the scoreboard ticking in the absence of the prodigal star.
CSK might be inclined to go with a like-for-like replacement by bringing Urvi Patel in for the teenager, as they prepare to clash against fellow five-time champions MI.
Urvil, a top-order batter who was roped in by CSK in 2025, displayed traces of brilliance on his debut for the side against KKR last year, and looks
like the ideal choice to step-in for the ICC U19 World Cup-winning skipper, who was on song before his unfortunate injury foiled the plot.
Chennai also have the options they have in the form of the expensive recent recruits Karthik Sharma and Prashant Veer, on whom the side splashed a fortune on at the auction table.
Sharma and Veer have had some exposure to the spotlight in the famous CSK yellow in the season which hasn’t gone exactly to plan for the most decorated side in the history of the money-rich T20 franchise league.
MI and CSK have managed to post just 4 points in their 6 outings this season, and will look to one-up the other in their pursuit of a top-4 spot, which seems unlikely at the moment. However, the five-time champions will look to jump-start their quest to knock on the door for the qualifiers.
Chennai started their campaign with three back-to-back defeats at the hands of Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, before logging wins against Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders. However, they slumped to a defat at Hyderabad, halting their momentum.
Mumbai, on the other hand, started their season with a win over KKR, before going down to DC, RR, RCB and PBKS, before posting their second win of the campaign with their win over Gujarat Titans.
