Michael Carrick wasn’t about to get carried away, not even after a statement win that could shape Manchester United’s future.
The Red Devils’ dramatic 3-2 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford didn’t just deliver bragging rights, but also secured Champions League football after a two-year absence.
Goals from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko gave United early control, only for Liverpool to claw their way back and level things at 2-2.
Then, Kobbie Mainoo stepped up late to fire home the winner, sending Old Trafford into chaos and capping off a night that confirmed United’s place back among Europe’s elite.
Carrick: “It Feels Natural”
Since taking over, Carrick has overseen a remarkable turnaround — registering 10 wins in 14 games and lifting United
to third in the table with wins over heavyweights like Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, and now Liverpool.
But when asked about making the job permanent, Carrick played it cool and stayed grounded.
🗣️ “It’s a great position for me to be in – it feels pretty natural if I’m totally honest…”

“It’s been a good run, we’ve obviously beaten some very, very good teams, and it’s been challenging,” Carrick said.
“Listen, I love doing what I’m doing, it’s a great position for me to be in, and it feels pretty natural, if I’m totally honest, without being blasé, because it’s a difficult role.
But I kind of understand what it brings, and to be seated in this position is a good position to be.”
Carrick made it clear his focus has been to just empower the players and let them deliver what they are capable of.
“Seeing this place alive and bouncing at the end is a real joy and a pleasure,” he added.
“Seeing where they’re really sticking in and fighting for each other, that’s what we want… We want a team to be proud of, and the boys have certainly gave us that.”
What Next?
For now, Carrick isn’t looking too far ahead.
“We’ll have to wait and see, that’s all we can do,” he said when asked about the permanent role.
“It’s a huge step (reclaiming a UCL spot)… but that can’t be everything. We want more than that, we want to expect more of that and consistently.”
