Kathmandu, Jun 14 (PTI) Nepal will export 40 MW electricity to Bangladesh from Sunday midnight according to a tripartite agreement involving the two countries and India signed in 2024, the Nepal Electricity Authority said.
Nepal had also sought permission from the Indian authorities for exporting additional 20 MW of hydro-electricity from this season, but it did not receive a green signal, said Tharka Bahadur Thapa, director of trade department of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).
Nepal has been exporting its surplus electricity to India and Bangladesh during monsoon season.
In November last year, Bangladesh had agreed to import additional 20 MW electricity from Nepal.
The NEA had made a request to Vidyu Vyapar Nigam Ltd India to facilitate
the additional 20 MW export to Bangladesh.
However, the Indian body stated that the current transmission line with a capacity of 400 KW cannot support the additional export of electricity to Bangladesh, Thapa said.
“We will export 40 MW of electricity to Bangladesh as usual starting from 12 am on Sunday,” Thapa added.
Bangladesh, India and Nepal had signed a pact in October 2024 under which it was agreed that Nepal will export 40 MW electricity to Bangladesh through Indian transmission lines.
As per the agreement, Nepal will export 40 MW electricity to Bangladesh during monsoon, from June 15 to November 15. PTI SBP GSP GSP
