The United Nations must remain at the centre of the global system as BRICS pushes for a more just, equitable and representative international order, the grouping said in its declaration.
BRICS leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening multilateralism and multipolarity, saying the existing architecture of international relations must be adapted to better reflect contemporary realities.
The declaration called for a global governance system that is “more just, equitable, agile, effective, efficient, responsive, representative, legitimate, democratic and accountable”.
Reiterating the importance of the UN, BRICS described it as the “indispensable cornerstone” of the international system. The grouping highlighted the organisation’s central
role in maintaining international peace and security, advancing sustainable development and promoting democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms.
BRICS also reaffirmed its commitment to international law and the principles of the UN Charter, stressing cooperation among sovereign states and the importance of solidarity, mutual respect, justice and equality.
The declaration comes as BRICS marks its 20th anniversary, with the grouping seeking to strengthen the voice of emerging markets and developing countries in global decision-making.
On reform of the UN Security Council, China and Russia, as permanent members, reiterated their support for the aspirations of Brazil and India to play a greater role in the United Nations, including the Security Council.
The statement places UN reform within BRICS’ broader push for a more representative global governance system, while reaffirming the UN’s central position in international affairs.
As the grouping enters its third decade, the New Delhi Declaration underlines its commitment to multilateralism, multipolarity and greater representation in global institutions, with the United Nations remaining at the heart of that vision.
