A 44-year-old Indian-origin man died of suspected cardiac arrest after waiting for over eight hours for treatment at a hospital in Canada’s Edmonton, raising concerns over emergency healthcare response
times.
The deceased, identified as 44-year-old Prashant Sreekumar, was rushed to the Grey Nuns Community Hospital in southeast Edmonton on December 22 after complaining of severe chest pain while at work. A client drove him to the hospital, where he was checked at triage and asked to wait in the emergency room, reported Global News.
Sreekumar remained in the waiting area for over eight hours despite repeatedly complaining of intense pain.
His family said he described the pain as “15 out of 10” on the pain scale. During this time, he was given Tylenol and underwent an ECG, after which he was told there was nothing significantly wrong.
His father, Kumar Sreekumar, who arrived at the hospital shortly after, said his son’s condition worsened as they waited. Nurses periodically checked Prashant’s blood pressure, which continued to rise. “It went up, up, and up. To me, it was through the roof,” Kumar told the news outlet. He said his son told him, “Papa, I cannot bear the pain.”
After waiting for over eight hours, Prashant was called into the emergency room. However, moments after sitting down, he collapsed. “After sitting maybe 10 seconds, he looked at me, he got up and put his hand on his chest and just crashed,” his father said.
Nurses immediately called for help, but Prashant could not be revived. He died in front of his father, leaving behind his wife and three children aged three, 10 and 14.
A video shared on social media platforms showed Prashant’s wife recounting the ordeal. She said his blood pressure had reportedly reached 210 but he was only treated with pain medication.

In a statement to Global News, the hospital expressed condolences to the family but declined to comment on the specifics of the care provided, citing privacy concerns.
“We offer our sympathy to the patient’s family and friends. There is nothing more important than the safety and care of our patients and staff,” the statement read.
