Bridging The Durand Line: Kabul Urges Pakistan To Replace Military Action With Direct Security Dialogue | Exclusive Details

In a rare direct address at Pakistan’s premier military institution, the Afghan Charge d’Affaires and Acting Ambassador to Pakistan, Sardar Ahmad Shakeeb, called for a fundamental pivot towards direct, evidence-based bilateral security dialogue to resolve mounting cross-border friction.

Speaking before senior civil and military officers at the National Defence University (NDU) in Islamabad, the envoy rejected unilateral military actions and urged Islamabad to abandon outdated historical perceptions regarding post-2021 Afghanistan.

Rejecting Military Action for Security Dialogue

Addressing top security strategists, Ambassador Shakeeb emphasised that security concerns should never be leveraged as a justification for direct military strikes or punitive unilateral actions. He highlighted that the

security calculations of both neighboring nations remain deeply interconnected, rendering unilateral posturing counterproductive to long-term regional stability.

The envoy reaffirmed Kabul’s firm commitment that Afghan territory will not be permitted for use against Pakistan or any other neighbour. However, he stressed that addressing security grievances requires specific, evidence-based allegations rather than broad public assertions, calling for institutionalised intelligence sharing and direct diplomatic channels to investigate operational concerns.

Moving Beyond Outdated Perceptions

Urging Pakistani policy planners to update their strategic outlook, Shakeeb stated that the governance, security landscape, and administrative reality of post-2021 Afghanistan must not be judged through the lens of past eras. He noted that lasting peace requires mutual respect for sovereignty and a shared recognition of overlapping regional interests.

The envoy’s address comes amid heightened border tensions and recurring security disputes along the Durand Line. By taking Kabul’s stance directly to Pakistan’s highest military education forum, the Afghan leadership signalled a desire to move past political standoffs and establish a pragmatic framework focused on trade, connectivity, and joint counter-terrorism efforts.
