Hyderabad, Sep 11 (PTI) A 45-year-old man, who allegedly posed as a political aide to top Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, was brought here from Punjab on a Production Transit warrant in connection with an impersonation fraud case registered in the city, police said on Friday.
The accused person was earlier arrested by Punjab Police and was lodged in Central Prison, Patiala. On September 10, Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police brought Gaurav Kumar alias Gora, for execution of the PT warrant, a police release said.
Police said on July 1, a complaint was received from AICC Secretary Jetti Kusuma Kumar, alleging that an unknown person was impersonating Kanishka Singh, a political aide to Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
The accused allegedly
contacted the complainant through WhatsApp calls and messages, falsely representing himself as Kanishka Singh and offering political favours, positions and other benefits in exchange for money.
The complainant produced the evidence, call details and requested police action. Accordingly, a case was registered, investigation was taken up to trace and identify the accused and prevent further misuse of Kanishka Singh’s identity and reputation. However no amount was lost, police said.
Police said the accused is a habitual offender who allegedly impersonated himself as a political aide associated with the Congress party.
“By falsely representing himself as a political aide, the accused deceived several candidates who had contested in Assembly elections from various political parties. The accused promised political support, positions, favours and other benefits in exchange for money and gold,” police said.
The accused had collected an amount of approximately Rs three crore in cash, along with gold ornaments, from 14 victims across different states, police added. PTI VVK VVK SA
