England are back at the top! The Harry Brook-led side climbed to the No. 1 position in the ICC T20I team rankings on Saturday (September 19) after whitewashing Sri Lanka in the three-match T20I series.
England chased down the target of 125 runs in just 9.4 overs on Saturday to secure a big win by 8 wickets over the Charith Asalanka-led side. The victory at Old Trafford in Manchester helped England complete a 3-0 series sweep and, as a result, they have now pipped India to reclaim the No. 1 position.
England have 269 rating points to their credit. India also have 269 rating points, but on decimal calculation, England are now ahead of India.
Jos Buttler top-scored for England in the third T20I. The right-handed wicketkeeper-batter opened the innings
in the 125-run chase and remained unbeaten on 62 runs off 32 balls. He hammered seven fours and two sixes during his stay at the crease and added 85 runs from 38 balls for the second wicket with captain Brook, who scored 33 runs off 21 balls.
Brook, who tops the list of batters with most T20I runs for England in a calendar year, bagged the Player of the Series award for scoring 170 runs in the three-match series. The right-handed batter from Yorkshire played an unbeaten knock of 114 runs in the series opener and scored 23 runs in the second T20I at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Thursday.
For England in the third T20I, Jofra Archer, Sonny Baker and Will Jacks picked up two wickets each. Baker, who finished with figures of 2/17 in 3.5 overs, was named Player of the Match.
After losing all three matches in the away series, Sri Lanka are ninth in the ICC T20I team rankings with 220 points.
India will have a chance to reclaim the No. 1 position in the T20I rankings when they take on Japan in a one-off T20I next week. After the match against Japan, the Indian team will feature in the 2026 Asian Games and then play five T20Is each against West Indies (at home) and New Zealand (away).
