In the world of streaming entertainment, few titles have managed to build a fandom as intense and long-lasting as the global hit created by Álex Pina. Now, years after its emotional finale, fresh movement around the franchise has once again sparked curiosity among viewers worldwide, with Netflix quietly setting the stage for what could be the next phase of the story universe.
The platform recently released a short teaser confirming that the “world of Money Heist” is far from finished. While the announcement has triggered excitement, it has also left fans guessing about what exactly is on the way. There is still no clarity on whether this means a brand-new season, a spin-off centred on a familiar character, or an extension of existing stories
within the franchise.
The original series, Money Heist (also known as La Casa de Papel), concluded its main storyline with Season 5 in 2021. Since then, the universe has expanded in smaller narrative threads, keeping interest alive even after the central heist ended.
In its recent announcement video, Netflix gave a nostalgic yet teasing reminder of the journey so far. The clip opens with a line that reads, “It all began with money and then became gold and priceless treasures”. It goes on to hint that the “revolution isn’t over yet,” suggesting that the next chapter of the saga is already in motion, even if details are still tightly under wraps.
The official description accompanying the video also leaned into the legacy of the series, stating that the story has consistently evolved over time. It highlighted how the universe has moved from early heists to large-scale, high-stakes robberies involving gold and elaborate operations inside major institutions. The message strongly suggested that the franchise is designed to keep expanding beyond its original storyline.
At this point, one of the most concrete developments in the franchise pipeline is the upcoming release of Berlin Season 2, which is scheduled to premiere on May 15. This series serves as a prequel spin-off, focusing on the character Andrés de Fonollosa, better known as Berlin, played by Pedro Alonso.
The new season reportedly shifts its storyline from Paris to Spain, where Berlin targets the Duke of Málaga as part of a fresh heist narrative. Alongside Pedro Alonso, the cast includes returning and new faces such as Michelle Jenner, Tristán Ulloa, Inma Cuesta, José Luis García-Pérez and Marta Nieto. Other familiar characters like Keila, Damián, Cameron, Roi and Bruce are also expected to continue their arcs.
The broader franchise journey began in 2017 when La Casa de Papel first aired on Spain’s Antena 3. After gaining strong domestic traction, it was later acquired by Netflix, where it transformed into a global phenomenon. The series went on to release multiple parts between 2018 and 2021, steadily building its international fanbase.
At the centre of the original story was the mysterious mastermind known as The Professor, played by Álvaro Morte, whose carefully planned heists became a defining element of the show’s popularity.
While Netflix has not officially confirmed whether the next project is a continuation, spin-off, or new season under the original banner, the message is clear: the Money Heist universe is still very much alive and possibly just getting started again.
