England’s Ben Duckett has been fined £700 after admitting a speeding offence, adding another off-field issue to a difficult spell in his career.
This comes after he recently withdrew from the Indian Premier League, turning down Delhi Capitals to address a dip in form before England’s Test series against New Zealand in June.
Ben Duckett Caught Speeding
The 31-year-old Englishman was clocked at 93mph in a 70mph zone on the A50 near Stoke in August, with the speed confirmed by a police speed gun.
Duckett, who plays for England in all formats, appeared before Cannock Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty. Alongside the fine, he received four penalty points on his driving licence and was ordered to pay £120 in court costs and a £280 victim surcharge, bringing the total financial
penalty to £1,100.
The offence occurred shortly after 1:30 PM on 24 August, just hours before Duckett produced a strong performance for Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred against Manchester Originals at Old Trafford. He first admitted the offence in September after being contacted by Staffordshire Police.
However, given the speed involved, authorities chose to pursue a criminal prosecution rather than an out-of-court disposal. Duckett submitted his guilty plea online via the Single Justice Procedure, and the case was concluded without a full public hearing.
Ben Duckett’s Past Controversies
Duckett has previous disciplinary issues, including a driving ban for drink-driving in 2015 and a 2017 controversy involving James Anderson.
Since 2022, however, he has re-established himself in the national side, thriving under England’s aggressive ‘Bazball’ approach. As England face a packed international schedule, he will hope to move on from this episode and concentrate fully on his on-field contributions.
“I’ve made the decision on my own accord. I felt the best thing for me to be ready to play for England is to be here right now, at home, refreshing my mind and body and getting in the best shape of my life come the First Test in June,” Duckett had said in his statement.
