ATM uprooting gang member arrested in Delhi case, cash worth Rs 19 lakh stolen

New Delhi, Jul 18 (PTI) A 26-year-old alleged member of the notorious Imran Mewati ATM uprooting gang, evading arrest in connection with the theft of over Rs 19 lakh from a private bank ATM in West Vinod Nagar, has been arrested, police said on Saturday.

The accused, Sazid alias Bhura, a resident of Nuh district in Haryana, was wanted in a case registered at Mandawali police station after an ATM in East Delhi was cut open with a gas cutter on the night of April 29.

The accused and his associates allegedly fled with Rs 19.32 lakh kept inside the machine, police said.

According to police, a Delhi court had issued non-bailable warrants against Sazid because he had been absconding since the case was registered.

“Acting on specific inputs, a team laid

a trap near Tauru Bypass Road in Nuh and apprehended the accused after he allegedly attempted to flee on spotting police,” a senior police officer said.

During interrogation, Sazid allegedly admitted his role in the Mandawali ATM uprooting case and disclosed that he had joined the Imran Mewati gang after coming in contact with its alleged kingpin, Imran, while lodged in Alwar jail in Rajasthan, police said.

Investigators said Sazid was previously involved in a 2021 ATM theft case registered at the Neemrana police station in Rajasthan. Then he and his associates allegedly stole Rs 12.70 lakh after cutting open an ATM.

Police said Imran remains absconding and is wanted in multiple cases registered across different states. Police said efforts are underway to trace and arrest the remaining gang members. PTI BM ASD ASD
