Sunny Deol Says Playing Hanuman In Ramayana Is ‘Not Easy’: ‘I Will Give It Everything I Have’

Sunny Deol has admitted that stepping into the role of Hanuman in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana comes with an enormous sense of responsibility. Speaking at the film’s event at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on July 18, the actor said he had completed only a small portion of his work and still had a long journey ahead.

The Delhi gathering marked a major promotional moment for the two-part epic. The film has been shot for IMAX, with its first chapter planned for 2026 and the concluding instalment expected in 2027.

‘I Have Only Just Begun My Work’

Sunny kept his remarks brief and direct. He told the audience that his work on Ramayana had only recently begun and that much remained to be done before he could fully understand where the performance would take

him.

“To tell you the truth, I have done only a little work on the film so far. I still have a long way to go,” he said.

For Sunny, the scale of the production is only one part of the challenge. He described Ramayana as something deeply significant to Indians, making the responsibility of portraying one of its most beloved figures heavier than an ordinary film assignment.

He thanked the makers for entrusting him with Hanuman and said, “I am grateful that I received the opportunity to play Hanuman ji. I will make every possible effort to portray him in the right way.”

‘Playing Hanuman Is Not Easy’

Sunny did not understate the difficulty of the role. Hanuman, he noted, cannot be reduced to physical power alone. The character brings together seemingly contrasting qualities: immense strength and humility, courage and innocence, force and devotion.

“Playing Hanuman ji is not easy,” Sunny said. “But I know I will enjoy it immensely. He is playful, innocent and powerful. He is loved by everyone, and above all, he is a devotee of Lord Ram.”

That combination appears to be at the centre of how the actor is approaching the part. Sunny has built much of his screen persona around physical intensity and moral conviction, but Hanuman asks for something beyond familiar heroism. His might is never separated from service, and his bravery is rooted in faith rather than pride.

Sunny did not offer details about his look, action sequences or the extent of Hanuman’s presence in the first instalment. His comments remained focused on the emotional and spiritual weight of the assignment.

Sunny Deol Asks Fans For Their Blessings

The actor also acknowledged that speaking before a large gathering does not come naturally to him. After sharing his thoughts on Hanuman, he admitted that addressing so many people made him slightly uncomfortable.

He nevertheless used the moment to seek the audience’s support for the team. “We need the blessings of all of you because we have taken on such a vast project,” he said.

Sunny expressed confidence that Ramayana would reach audiences across the country. “I firmly believe that every Indian will watch it,” he added.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana, with Sunny appearing as Hanuman.
