After months of rising tension between the United States and Venezuela, the Donald Trump-led US administration launched military action against the Latin American country on Saturday. During the operation,
President Nicolas Maduro and his wife were taken into custody and are now on their way to New York to face prosecution.
The announcement led to widespread speculation about where Maduro and his wife were captured from.
Capture at military base in Caracas
Nahum Fernandez, a senior leader of Venezuela’s ruling party, said the couple were taken from their residence inside the Fuerte Tiuna military complex.
Fuerte Tiuna, also known as Fort Tiuna, is a major military installation located in the capital city, Caracas.
“That’s where they bombed,” Fernandez said. “And there, they carried out what we could call a kidnapping of the president and the first lady of the country,” he told the Associated Press.
US President Donald Trump later said that Maduro and his wife were aboard a US warship and were being taken to New York, where they will face prosecution.
What next for Venezuela?
Speaking to Fox News, Trump said the United States would be “very much” involved in deciding Venezuela’s next steps.
“We can’t take a chance of letting somebody else run and just take over where he left off… We want liberty for the people,” he said.
Trump also said he watched the military operation from his Mar-a-Lago residence. He praised the operation, calling it “amazing” and said the team showed high levels of professionalism and leadership.
He said he believed no US troops were killed, but confirmed that some soldiers were injured during the operation.
