Mumbai, Jun 10 (PTI) The Mumbai civic body has begun distributing QR code-based identity cards to registered hawkers across the city, aimed at bringing transparency to the hawking system.
The exercise, launched on June 1 following directions of the Bombay High Court, is being carried out through the civic body’s 26 ward offices, according to a release issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Wednesday.
The QR code-based cards are being issued to facilitate identification of registered street vendors, it said, adding that verification of around 20,000 registered hawkers has been completed so far out of a total of 99,435 eligible street vendors.
The BMC has displayed lists of registered hawkers at all ward offices and shared them with
public representatives, hawkers’ unions, and elected representatives of street vendors.
The civic body clarified that verification and distribution of QR code-based identity cards will not be carried out after the stipulated deadline of June 26 and appealed to all remaining registered hawkers to complete the process within the prescribed period, the release said.
The registered hawkers must carry the application acknowledgement receipt, original Aadhaar card, and two passport-size photos while appearing for verification. PTI KK NSK
