For generations of Indonesian viewers, Sunday mornings started with watching Doraemon on TV. This practice is now coming to an abrupt end, as per the latest reports. After more than three decades on air, the popular Japanese cartoon Doraemon will no longer be shown on Indonesian television channel Rajawali Citra Televisi Indonesia (RCTI), signalling the end of an era that moulded children’s lives across the country. The long-running series, which follows a robotic cat from the 22nd century who is seen assisting Nobita to solve his everyday life issues, has been absent from RCTI’s programming schedule since the end of 2025. The sudden disappearance has sparked an outpouring of comments online, with fans seeking answers about the show’s future.
Doraemon’s Broadcast comes to an end?
RCTI has not published an official statement explaining the decision to remove Doraemon from its lineup. Catatan Film added to the conjecture by sharing facts from broadcast schedules. “Based on the programme data on the RCTI+ website, Doraemon has disappeared from RCTI’s schedule from December 29, 2025, to January 4, 2026,” the post continued, noting that the station had also rarely played Doraemon films in recent months.

Doraemon originally appeared on Indonesian television in the early 1990s, swiftly becoming a cultural icon. For many households, 8 a.m. on Sundays was synonymous with Nobita’s exploits and Doraemon’s futuristic devices, which frequently taught lessons about friendship, responsibility, and perseverance.

The show’s removal has prompted a broader conversation across platforms. On X, the IndonesiaPop Base account announced that Doraemon had officially finished its run on RCTI after nearly four decades, reflecting the collective sense of grief felt by long-time fans.
Doraemon, which first aired in Japan on TV Asahi in 1979, has been adapted several times throughout the years. The franchise’s mix of science fiction, comedy, and sympathetic storytelling has helped it to connect across generations, confirming its status as more than just a children’s animation in Indonesia.
