New Delhi, Jul 27 (PTI) A 51-year-old man climbed onto a tree in central Delhi on Monday and allegedly attempted to end his life, claiming he had not been paid his dues by an NGO managing shelter homes for the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), police said.
The man, identified as Ram Sabad, climbed onto the tree around 11 am, prompting passersby to alert the police.
A police team rushed to the spot, secured the area and began persuading him to not take a drastic step, while personnel from the Delhi Fire Services were also pressed into service.
“With the joint efforts of the police and fire brigade personnel, the man was safely brought down from the tree without sustaining any injuries,” a senior police officer said.
During questioning,
Ram Sabad alleged that he had not received payments from an NGO engaged by DUSIB for management of shelter homes. He claimed that the non-payment of his dues had driven him to take the extreme step, police said.
They said representatives of the NGO and concerned officials were contacted after the incident. However, despite repeated calls, no one was available at the time.
“The man was counselled at the spot and assured that his grievance would be looked into and appropriate action taken in accordance with the law,” the officer said. The situation was brought under control without any untoward incident, police added. PTI BM BM ARB ARB
