Football fans are obviously counting down the days to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but K-pop fans just got a major reason to be excited too. The tournament may still be weeks away, but one announcement has already sent social media into full celebration mode and yes, it involves Lisa from Blackpink.
Lisa has officially been confirmed as a performer at the FIFA World Cup 2026 opening ceremony. Her agency, LLOUD, shared the update on social media along with a promotional image of the singer, confirming that she will be part of the massive sporting event’s opening celebrations in the United States.
With the announcement, Lisa is now set to become the first Thai artist and the first female K-pop act to headline a FIFA World Cup opening ceremony, a milestone
that fans are already calling iconic.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to run from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Organisers are reportedly planning three separate opening ceremonies across the host countries, making this one of the biggest World Cup events ever staged in North America.
As expected, Lisa’s fandom wasted no time flooding social media with reactions. One fan wrote, “We are so proud of you pookie always making history,” while another posted, “LISA at the FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony feels like FIFA fully understanding modern global pop culture.”
According to reports by The Sun and The New York Times, Katy Perry is also expected to be among the major performers involved in the World Cup celebrations. Reports further claim that rapper Future, Los Angeles-based DJ Sanjoy and Paraguayan singer Marilina Bogado are expected to perform during the opening events as well.
The tournament itself will begin at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, where the host nation will reportedly face South Africa. Meanwhile, the United States is expected to begin its campaign against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium near Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, Lisa and the rest of Blackpink — Jennie, Rosé and Jisoo — recently made headlines after attending the 2026 Met Gala together for the first time. The group also recently dropped their third EP, Deadline.
There is also growing buzz around Blackpink’s reported third full-length album, Born To Shine, which is expected to release around August 2026 to mark the group’s 10th anniversary. While the album has not yet been officially confirmed, rumours about possible collaborations with Rosalía and Pharrell Williams have already got fans talking online.
