Ranbir Kapoor might be one of Bollywood’s most bankable stars today, but his school journey was full of struggles. In a throwback chat, the actor revealed how he barely scraped through his exams, often
faced punishment from teachers, and yet ended up giving his family a reason to celebrate when he scored just 54% in Class 10.
Strict school days
Ranbir recalled being treated like any other student despite belonging to cinema’s first family. “They don’t treat you differently in school, but you do realise that you are somewhere special among the 40 students. They are more curious about you,” he said.
The actor remembered his time at Bombay Scottish as particularly tough. “It was a very strict kind of convent school, I got beaten up a lot by the principal. Once he slapped my face from one corridor of the school to another, held my head, turned me the other way, and then slapped me on the way back.”
Passing with 54%
Admitting that studies were never his strength, Ranbir confessed, “I was a bad student. I was among the last three in the class, but I never failed. I always managed to pass the year. I got 54.3% in my 10th standard.”
That score turned out to be historic in his household. “My mom was in Mumbai and she called me crying. She couldn’t believe that I passed the 10th grade. Because I was the first male member of my family to have passed school without failing. I remember my grandmother, uncles and father were in New York and they were jubilant.”
Disliking the ‘star kid’ label
Ranbir acknowledged his privilege but said he dislikes the constant tag. “I don’t like the tag of being called a star son. Yes I got the opportunity early and I grew up in a luxurious background, but in the last few years, I have really worked hard to earn a name for myself.”
He added, “I want my father to be known by my name.”
Ranbir Kapoor’s upcoming movies
Ranbir Kapoor will be next seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War alongside Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal.
Set to release on March 26 next year, Love and War takes inspiration from Raj Kapoor’s timeless classic Sangam. The narrative revolves around an emotionally charged love triangle, played out against the backdrop of war, with Bhansali’s signature storytelling style promising a blend of heightened drama, intricate human emotions, and grand visual compositions. The fact that Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, a real-life couple, will be portraying lovers on screen for Bhansali adds an extra layer of intrigue, while Vicky Kaushal’s inclusion ensures a compelling dynamic at the heart of the story.
