In a striking, hands-on assessment of women’s safety in the city, Malkajgiri Police Commissioner B Sumathi went undercover late at night, posing as a lone commuter at a bus stop, only to face harassment within minutes.
Between midnight and 3 am, Sumathi stood alone at the busy Dilsukhnagar bus stop without any visible security, pretending to wait for public transport. The situation escalated quickly. Several men began harassing her – some slowed down on their bikes to pass lewd comments, while others circled around her and asked offensive, intrusive questions.
What the men did not realise was that they were being closely watched. Teams of SI- and Inspector-level officers were strategically stationed nearby, monitoring the entire operation from
a distance, ready to step in if needed. By the end of the exercise, around 40 individuals had been detained for inappropriate behaviour. Officials said all those picked up will undergo counselling as part of corrective action.
The late-night operation was not a one-off stunt but a response to growing concerns. Police had received multiple complaints about harassment in the Dilsukhnagar area, particularly after dark. After taking charge as Malkajgiri Commissioner on May 1, Sumathi made it a priority to address these issues.
A review of the locality revealed a pattern of disturbances near hostel clusters, where women commuting late at night often become targets for intoxicated men loitering in the area.
Rather than relying solely on reports, Sumathi chose to experience the situation firsthand. By stepping into the role of a vulnerable commuter, she aimed to understand both the scale and nature of the problem on the ground.
Sumathi’s approach is consistent with her track record. She began her policing career as a DSP in Karimnagar and has previously led similar field-level operations that drew public appreciation. Now serving in the IG rank as Commissioner, her decision to personally lead the exercise has once again caught public attention.
On social media, many users praised the initiative, with several referring to her as ‘Lady Singham’ – a nod to her proactive, no-nonsense style of policing.
