The qualifying tournaments for cricket at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will reportedly take place in January and February 2028, with eight teams each competing for places in the men’s and women’s events.
According to a report by Cricinfo, the qualification window was part of a global events calendar circulated by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to its member boards after meetings in Dubai earlier this month. Cricket will return to the Olympics in Los Angeles 2028 after more than a century, having last featured at the 1900 Paris Games.
Australia, India, South Africa and Britain have already secured places in the women’s competition as the highest-ranked teams from their respective continents, based on performances at the T20 World Cup
earlier this year.
In the men’s event, the top-ranked T20I teams from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania as of December 31, 2026, will qualify directly under the continental qualification system. Currently, these are South Africa, India, England and Australia.
Hosts, the United States, are eligible to compete in both the men’s and women’s tournaments, provided they rank among the top 15 teams in the respective rankings during the qualification period, which runs from June 30 to December 31, 2026.
If the US women’s team fails to meet the ranking requirement by the end of this year, its place will be reassigned based on the ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 standings, with March 1, 2027, set as the cut-off date.
The eight-team qualifying tournaments will feature sides selected by the ICC based on international rankings. The final line-ups for both competitions are yet to be confirmed.
The report also outlined the ICC’s broader international calendar, with 12 men’s events, seven women’s events and five Under-19 tournaments, including qualifiers, scheduled between the 2027 and 2031 ODI World Cups.
It added that the 2029 World Test Championship final is scheduled to be held in England from June 8 to 12.
While several major tournaments had already been finalised by the ICC in 2021, further dates have now been assigned, with some details of the international calendar still to be confirmed.
