In yet another conflict over language in Maharashtra, a man dressed as Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj engaged in a heated argument with a security guard at Vasai Fort, who told him to speak in Hindi
and leave the compound over a photoshoot.
As per reports, the man arrived at Vasai Fort dressed in traditional attire resembling Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to record a short video. However, security guards stopped him from shooting without permission, after which their argument went viral on social media.
The man was further infuriated when the guard revealed that he did not know Marathi. “I spoke to you in Hindi out of respect; you should respect Maharashtra by speaking Marathi. How long have you worked here?” enquired the man.
The guard replied that he had been working for two years and would learn Marathi soon, but the man continued to question him aggressively and asked, “Marathi kyun nahi seekha (Why didn’t you learn Marathi)?”

He further accused the guard of disrespecting the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj by not knowing Marathi. “You don’t know Marathi, and you’re acting smart here. Remember, you’ll be famous for this and might lose your job,” he said.
The video quickly went viral, with some people criticising the man for going against the principles of Shivaji Maharaj by harassing the guard, while others said the guard needed to be taught a lesson.
“The guard was in the wrong for stopping him from shooting his reel. But the guy became wrong when he started misbehaving & demanding Marathi language learning from a poor guy who is posted there by an agency. Ask the agency to post only Marathi guys in Maharashtra & we’ll see how many security guards are available here,” a user said.
“These Frauds can only act superficially of Shivaji Maharaj & can never imbibe the values our great Chad hindu leaders possess,” another individual wrote. A third person commented, “Dressing up like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj means you carry his values — courage, justice, and respect for all people, no matter what language they speak. Shivaji Maharaj never disrespected the poor or powerless; he was known for protecting them.”
Meanwhile, the Archaeological Society of India (ASI) on Wednesday promised appropriate action after the man was denied entry at the historical site.
