India are sweating over the fitness of yet another one of their star players in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026. After Washington Sundar, Harshit Rana and Jasprit Bumrah, big-hitting opening batter Abhishek Sharma too is under the weather and reportedly was hospitalised as his condition has worsened.
According to a report in the timesofindia.com, Abhishek is suffering from an infection, even though officially his absence has been attributed to fever. During India’s World Cup opener against the USA last Sunday, the youngster had a high fever and despite that, he opened the innings but was out for a golden duck.
Abhishek though didn’t take the field during USA’s innings and wasn’t seen in Team India’s dug-out either.
The publication further reported
that Abhishek was put on a drip for immediate relief.
The 25-year-old wasn’t part of India’s training session in the national capital on Tuesday where they are set to face Namibia in their second group fixture of the World Cup.
“Abhi (Abhishek) still has a few issues with his tummy. We are hopeful that he’ll be available for the game in two days’ time,” India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said.
“We’re waiting on Abhi’s fitness more than anything, and that will again open up a few different combinations,” he added.
In a positive news, India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is expected to be back in action on Thursday when they take on Namibia. Bumrah sat out from the USA game due to being unwell.
“Booms (Bumrah) will bowl today (Tuesday) as well. He’s been what, ten days without bowling, but he’s feeling a lot better and moving a lot better. So we’ll see how training goes today and tomorrow and then put the team together on Thursday,” Ten Doeschate said.
Meanwhile, Sundar has linked up with the India squad in New Delhi having been cleared by the BCCI after recovering from a rib injury.
