A man in Pune decided to order prasad from the famous Shree Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple through Swiggy to his home. But he was left confused when he saw the GST charged on the items worth just Rs 26. He shared his query with the food delivery platform about the calculation and ultimately decided to drop the plan of ordering prasad.
In a post on X, Aditya Daga shared a screenshot, showing that Swiggy was charging Rs 30.30 under Restaurant GST, along with Rs 3.42 GST on the delivery fee and a Rs 17.98 platform fee inclusive of GST for an order of items worth Rs 26. The total amount payable stood at Rs 97. “Hey @Swiggy @SwiggyCares, how is GST 30/-, if items itself cost 26/-?” he asked.
“GST Was Calculated On Original Price” His post caught
the attention of the food delivery platform, who responded to him by asking Daga to confirm the original price of the item. He then shared another screenshot, featuring the details that showed the prasad had originally been listed at a higher price before an offer was applied, which brought down the price significantly.
Swiggy then replied, “Thank you. GST was calculated on the original price, Aditya.”
“Shouldn’t It Be Counted On Final Item Value?”
However, that explanation did not settle the matter for Daga, who questioned whether GST should be calculated on the final price. He said, “But shouldn’t it be counted on final item value? Bcz that is what i am paying 26/-.” He also tagged the Income Tax Department and GST Council, saying, “GST is always paid on payable amount not on any notional MRP. @IncomeTaxIndia @GST_Council please check on this practice and clarify.”
Discouraged by the high GST charges, he finally decided against placing an order for the prasad from the platform.
@adi_daga Thank you. GST was calculated on the original price, Aditya.

Internet Has Mixed Reactions
His post has sparked a discussion online, with users debating whether GST should be calculated on the discounted price or on the original price before an offer. Some also called out the platform and its practices.
“Discount is applied by Swiggy. Swiggy still pays full price to the restaurant technically. So GST applies at full price,” said a user.
“That is called Restaurant GST, woh alag hota hai. It’s the wish of the restaurant to charge more in a different name,” another wrote.
Someone else said, “GST used to be calculated on whatever price displayed after applying a discount. Now they are cleverly charging the original price.”
Meanwhile, an individual remarked, ”They always find a way to steal from us.”
“They are looting customers.. #stop using Swiggy,” a different person shared.
