In good news for Thane motorists, the Anand Nagar-Saket stretch may soon get trafficrespite. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to build an 8.24-km-long elevated corridor
from Anand Nagar along the Eastern Express highway to Saket, the Indian Express reported.
The plan
The corridor will begin in Anand Nagar, starting from the landing of Chheda Nagar to Anand Nagar corridor, and traverse through the congested Thane junctions before landing at Saket in Thane West.
The corridor will comprise six lanes and cater to two-way traffic, with three lanes on each carriageway. The project will cost Rs 1,847.72 crore and is estimated to be completed by 2028, said the IE report.
Why the corridor?
The EEHsees heavy traffic at multiple junctions in Thane, including Teen Hath Naka, Nitin Junction, Cadbury Junction and Golden Dyes Junction in Majiwada.
Although these intersections are equipped with six-lane flyovers, traffic flow continues to remain slow because a network of slip roads and service roads merge directly onto the highway, creating continuous two-way conflict points and longer wait times for commuters.
The proposed elevated corridor will rise above these major intersections, offering motorists a signal-free drive and reducing commute times not only within Thane but also for high-volume through-traffic coming from Mumbai and Nashik toward the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway, said the report.

Thane-NMIA double-decker corridor: A 26-km corridor has been proposed. It links Patni Chowk in Thane to Vashi and has 9-km connector from Vashi to NMIA. The double-decker design is meant to ease congestion on the Thane-Belapur Road. The DPR is underway, while the construction is yet to begin. It has been approved and will facilitate passengers from the entire metropolitan region. With this elevated corridor, it will take just a few minutes to travel from Mumbai and Thane to Navi Mumbai. This elevated road will be connected to Ulwe Coastal Road. It will be connected to the Navi Mumbai airport terminals by an elevated road.

Ghodbunder Road widening: To address chronic congestion, the service roads on both sides of Ghodbunder Road are being merged into the main carriageway, effectively expanding it into a six-lane highway. Many, however, have raised safety concerns.
Balkum-Gaimukh Coastal Road: A dedicated 13.44-km coastal arterial road is underway parallel to Ghodbunder Road. This 40-45 m wide corridor, budgeted at Rs 3,364 crore, will feature viaducts and open-cut sections to provide an alternative east-west route, significantly relieving Ghodbunder Road congestion.
