Star wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler and fast bowler Jofra Archer will miss the upcoming ODI tri-series in Pakistan. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) took to X on Thursday (October 1) to announce England’s 16-member squad for the tri-series later this month, and there was no place for Buttler and Archer in the team picked for the overseas assignment.
While Buttler has missed out due to an injury he suffered while batting in the second ODI against Sri Lanka last week, Archer has been rested.
The ECB selectors have included three uncapped players in the squad for the series, which also includes Sri Lanka in addition to Pakistan. In addition to the uncapped players, Sam Curran and Adil Rashid are also back for the 2019 ODI World Cup winners.
They had missed the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka last month due to injury.

“Adil Rashid is fit again after a hand injury ruled him out of the recent 2-1 Metro Bank ODI Series win over Sri Lanka, while Sam Curran returns from a groin injury. Jofra Archer is rested for the tour while Jos Buttler misses out with the hamstring injury he sustained in the second Metro Bank ODI against Sri Lanka,” the ECB stated in a release.
“Glamorgan leg-spinner Mason Crane, who is uncapped in the ODI format, is called into the squad eight years after making his previous England appearance in the 2018 fifth Men’s Ashes Test in Sydney. Crane has additionally made two IT20 appearances in 2017. Uncapped Sussex pair James Coles and Henry Crocombe, who were both part of white-ball squads this summer, are also included,” the release added.
According to ECB selector Marcus North, the tri-series in Pakistan will provide the England ODI squad with an opportunity to test themselves against quality opposition.
“The tri-series in Pakistan provides another valuable opportunity for our ODI squad to test themselves against quality opposition in different conditions,” North said in a statement.
“Adil Rashid and Sam Curran return to the squad following their respective injuries, while Jofra Archer has been rested to manage his workload following a busy summer. Mason Crane has been performing consistently for Glamorgan across both formats during the summer. He’s an experienced, high-class leg-spinner who thoroughly deserves another opportunity at international level,” he added.
England squad for ODI tri-series: Harry Brook (C), Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, Tom Banton (WK), James Coles, Jordan Cox (WK), Mason Crane, Henry Crocombe, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Josh Tongue
