Vibhu Puri’s directorial film Gustaakh Ishq was first screened at the Gala Premiere section of Goa’s 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI). It opened in theatres on November 28, 2025. Audiences
had varied feelings about the film, although they praised and loved Vijay and Fatima’s performances. Now after much anticipation, the film is all set to stream on OTT this month.
According to a Free Press Journal report, the film would be published on JioHotstar commencing January 23. The film delves into subjects like love and sacrifice, the preservation of art and legacy, the conflict between tradition and modernisation, and the spirit of poetry.
Gustaakh Ishq – Plot
The film tells the narrative of Nawabuddin Saifuddin Rahman, a young man living in poverty with his mother and younger brother, Jumman, in Darya Ganj, Purani Delhi. Nawabuddin, as the eldest child, has taken on the family’s responsibilities since a young age. He is aware that his late father’s prized printing press has been abandoned. Determined to honour his father’s legacy, he intends to restart the printing firm. Nawabuddin’s life changes dramatically when he travels to Punjab on business and falls in love with the daughter of an Urdu poet.
Vijay Varma has been open about breaking his negative on-screen image and step into the world of old-school romance as a lover boy in Manish Malhotra’s produced Gustaakh Ishq. On the other hand, speaking about casting Fatima as the lead during the trailer launch, Manish Malhotra shared, “She’s very petite and beautiful. She’s always done such wonderful roles, but she’s never come as a ‘heroine’ – with the dupatta and nazaakat. So I texted her, and she was very responsive. She asked for the script, and I sent it to her at about 8 o’clock. Just when I went to sleep at about 11:30 pm, I got a message from her saying that ‘I’m doing the film’. We had a lot of discussions.”
Gustaakh Ishq – Cast
The film’s ensemble cast includes Vijay Varma as Nawabuddin Saifuddin Rahman / Pappan, Fatima Sana Shaikh as Minni, Naseeruddin Shah as Aziz Baig/Babba, Rohan Verma as Jummah, Sharib Hashmi as Bhoore, Rohan Verma as Jummah, and Natasha Rastogi as Mother, among others. Gustaak Ishq was produced by Manish Malhotra and Dinesh Malhotra under the name Stage5 Productions. Vishal Bhardwaj created the music for the film and Hitesh Sonik composed the score.
