Indian sprinter Vishal TK produced a blitzing run to break his own national record in the 400m events on Saturday at the Federation Cup Athletics in Ranchi as he became the first athlete from the nation to finish the event within 45 seconds.
Vishal registered a run of of 44.98s, in what was a special day for athletics in the nation after a Gurvinder Singh blitz in the 100m event earlier in the day.
Earlier in the evening, Gurvinder scripted history as he recorded a 10.09s finish in the 100m event to shatter the national record and book his berth in the Commonwealth and Asian Games.
Gurvinder became the first Indian to dip below the 10.10s mark with a blistering run in the 100m final in Ranchi, reclaiming the national record from Animesh Kujur.
Kujur finished second on the day with a time of 10.20s, while Pranav Pramod completed the podium with a 10.29s run.
Gurvinder’s statement performance in the final came just a day after both he and Kujur produced record-setting runs in their respective semifinal heats. Gurvinder clocked 10.17s in his 100m semifinal to better Kujur’s mark from last year, only for Kujur to regain the record moments later with a personal best of 10.15s in the second heat.
The meet also doubles as the CWG 2026 qualifier. Animesh cleared the qualification standard of 10.16s, but Gurvinder fell short by a heartbreaking 0.01s. However, he redeemed himself with his record-breaking run on Saturday.
The duo, who train under coach James Hillier, also compete in the 200m event.
