RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat Backs LGBTQ+ Community: 'They're Part Of Our Society And Deserve Dignity'

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday said the LGBTQ+ community is an integral part of society and deserves dignity and equal respect.

Speaking at an event in Hyderabad, Bhagwat said LGBTQ+ individuals should not be looked down upon or discriminated against.

“LGBTQ+ community is a part of our society; they deserve dignity and equal place,” he said, stressing the need for an inclusive and respectful approach towards members of the community.

Live-In Relationships And Gen Z

Addressing the event on “contemporary motherhood” organised by the Vishwa Mangalya Sabha, the RSS chief also shared his views on marriage and live-in relationships, describing marriage as a discipline that instils dharma while cautioning against what he called the growing trend of live-in relationships. He said Gen Z is imitative and emotional, often reacting to what appears to be genuine without calm reflection.

“Marriage is a discipline which instils dharma. Its alternative is live-in relationship. Modernity. What are its consequences? We don’t want responsibilities but happiness. Stay together when it is wanted and part ways when not wanted. No responsibilities. What will grow with it? What is growing, look around the world,” he remarked.

Bhagwat, however, added that modernity was necessary and that adapting to changing times was also part of India’s traditions. In an apparent reference to live-in relationships, he said they reflected degradation and blind imitation of Western culture, while maintaining that modernity itself was welcome.
